Our Campaign to Grow in Faith, Fellowship, and Service and to Be a Light for the City
The Rev. Dr. R. Leigh Spruill, rector
"It has been 32 years since our church has executed a long-range plan to improve the campus as a faithful investment in the future, and our sincere belief is that the time to do so has come. I hope you will prayerfully consider a commitment to our Shine Forth campaign to grow in faith, fellowship, and service."

Building Our Future Together
Key Project Highlights
A Few Common Questions
We are currently aiming to raise $55 million. This figure is subject to change as the design evolves or as economic factors change (for example, tariffs impacting material costs). We have planned for contingencies and will be forthcoming about changing costs and design evolutions.
It began with our leadership developing a strategic plan for the future of the church. At a certain point, it became clear that, in order to attain our goals, we had to improve our campus proactively rather than find ourselves having to make reactive moves in the future.
Then, this vision was developed over many months of careful deliberation by church leaders and a Master Campus Planning Committee, as well as through much engagement with our parishioners.
The Campus Master Plan design is complete and approved by the vestry, allowing the project to move into the detailed design phase. This current stage is expected to take approximately 14 months and will result in final construction documents ready for submission to the city for permitting. The permitting process is anticipated to take around 8 months. If all proceeds as planned, groundbreaking could begin as early as the Fall 2026. Construction is projected to take 20 to 22 months, with full project completion targeted for the third quarter of 2028.
Our leaders have a detailed understanding of how operating costs will increase, and a maintenance reserve fund has been built into the ask.
During different phases of construction, access to our campus will be limited. We have a detailed plan to minimize the impact and will ensure that access to the Church, Chapel, Hall Life Center, and First Steps Montessori remains uninterrupted.
Why We're Giving
We are entrusted to be good stewards of all that God has given to us - to enjoy it, but to also look beyond ourselves and how we can use it for good.
Our family is honored to “pay it forward” and enable SJD’s continued growth in the service of God’s will for Houston, and indeed, our nation.
We believe it is essential to contribute to the capital campaign to help our campus grow and support our vision.
I’m supporting this campaign because Jesus came not to be served but to serve, and our church lives out that calling by being His hands and feet in our city.
Give a Gift to the Next Generation
Your gift to this campaign will mean so much more than just the building of some new facilities. It will help write a new chapter in the story of St. John the Divine — a story that will continue to be written by all the families who will walk these halls in the generations to come. This is your chance to help strengthen the foundations of our community and leave a lasting legacy.
We ask you to prayerfully consider making a pledge to help St. John the Divine Shine Forth.
